With Jay Leno’s contract coming up in 2014, rumblings are beginning that NBC is ready to replace the longtime Tonight Show host with someone younger and hipper — The Late Show’s Jimmy Fallon.

According to a report in The New York Daily News, “various talent agents” say they’ve been quietly contacted by NBC brass looking for someone to take over Fallon’s 12:35 p.m. time slot.

Although there is nothing even remotely official to back up what seems to be little more than an unsubstantiated rumour, it would actually make sense, given Leno’s recent ratings slide and ABC’s decision to move Jimmy Kimmel’s show a half-hour earlier to place it in direct competition with The Tonight Show.

Meanwhile, Conan O’Brien is rubbing his hands together and, in his best Mr. Burns impersonation, whispering, “Excellent.”
