Notre Dame quarterback Manti Te’o made headlines after the story emerged that he was the victim of an Internet hoax that led him to believe he had a girlfriend who then leukemia — despite the unfortunate truth that the woman he thought was his girlfriend never actually existed.
This bizarre story has already been spoofed on SNL, but Katie Couric will hopefully get to the bottom of things this week, when she’ll grill the Te’o in his very first televised interview after the story became public.
Couric beat out Oprah Winfrey, who was also trying to land Te’o for his first on-camera interivew. ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap interviewed the QB on Friday, but Te’o's representatives insisted the interview take place off camera. One factor that may have worked in Couric’s favour: she and Te’o are reportedly both repped by the same agency, CAA.
Couric’s interview with Te’o will be aired this Thursday on her syndicated daytime talk show Katie.
