Two weeks after Late Night host Jimmy Fallon and wife Nancy welcomed their baby daughter, Fallon has revealed that the child was born to a surrogate.

“It wasn’t really a secret, but my wife and I had been trying for awhile to have a baby,” Fallon said during an interview with The Today Show. “We’ve tried a bunch of different things, so we had a surrogate.”

Fallon and his wife had been trying to have a baby for years, and he told Today that they decided to keep the news of the impending birth a secret. “This time we just said we’re not going to tell anybody,” Fallon said, “it’d be just more fun if it’s just private between me and my wife and then we get to introduce her to everybody.”

When the baby girl, whom they named Winnie, was finally born, they found themselves suddenly faced with telling friends and family members who had been kept in the dark. “When it happened we were in shock,” said Fallon. “We’re like, ‘Alright, who do we tell? Who’s going to be mad at us if this gets out?’ We had to call everybody and it’s so emotional when you call everybody.”
