Abysmal grey skies and sharp silhouettes won British photographer Craig Easton the title of Travel Photographer of the Year in 2012.

Determined by travel photography website, TPOTY.com, the annual competition attracts photographers both amateur and professional who submit online a body of their most recent work which is then judged by a panel of industry experts including photographers, editors, buyers and digital imaging experts. The winners, receive a variety of different cash and scholarship prizes and are displayed in an exhibit at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in London. You can catch this year’s winners from  July 12th to August 18th in  2013.

Not the most obvious choice, the judges were moved by the sharp contrast between Easton’s murky images of the wet Scottish Highland compared to the crisp city scenes in Paris. I personally found the Scottish scenes most captivating – in particular the above one which shows just the smallest patch of land against the massive threatening sky.
