NASA’s newest photos of Earth are so incredible they reawaken every childhood dream we ever had of being an astronaut. Taken in the dark of night, the photos feature glowing city lights, the burning pattern of wildfires, and striking auroras peppered around the globe.

The photos were taken by the newly launched NASA-NOAA satellite that contains a sensor built for observing the planet at night time.

Hurricane Sandy had just ravaged New Jersey and lower Manhattan when the photos were captured, so those areas look particularly dim in comparison to surrounding regions due to power outages.
