We’ve seen many geeky uses for 3D-printing, which is entertaining, but it’s always better to see technology serve a greater purpose. This story is a perfect example of that. Doctors at the C.S. Mot Children’s Hospital were able to save the life of a 20-month-old boy with a faulty windpipe.

The baby boy, who suffered from a collapsed bronchus, was likely not going to make it out of the hospital alive. Desperate to intervene and help, doctors were able to obtain an emergency clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to 3D-print 100 tiny tubes, and to laser-stitch them over the trachea, forming a splint.

They used safe materials that will dissolve into the body after the boy’s trachea has time to grow into a healthy state (approx. 2-3 years).

They say homemade gifts mean the most, and if that homemade gift happens to be an engagement ring? Well, that’s a double whammy. Engineer Ben Kokes did just that for his girlfriend (now fiancé), constructing a titanium ring to propose with. The best part? It features LED lights that shine bright whenever her man is close. Aw.

Inside the ring is an LED and copper coil assembly, which lights up anytime is comes close to an “induced alternating magnetic field”. Those are fancy words for a “transmitter”. Kokes wears the armband concealed under a jacket.

Kokes performed many tests and experiments to ensure the ring worked perfectly for his proposal. It took him ten versions. Initially, he wanted to present her with the ring, then get something more permanent from a professional jeweler, but his lady loved it so much, she insisted he tweak it so she can wear it forever.

As summer weather starts to move in across Canada and we begin to emerge from a winter mostly spent indoors the timing is perfect for us to take advantage of the power available from our sun. For many people around the world however, the sun is the only source of potential power yet finding ways to harness it for tasks as simple as lighting can be very difficult. The WakaWaka brand is looking to tackle both sides of the spectrum with their ambitious and innovative products, one of which we have been testing out here over the past few weeks.

The WakaWaka POWER charger is a handy little portable gadget that will allow you to supply juice to your smartphone or tablet using solar energy that doubles as a versatile lamp, making it the perfect addition for taking on the outdoors this summer. What makes it even better however, is that for every unit you buy they will donate one to someone living in an impoverished part of the world, such as Haiti, Syria or across Africa, giving them access to lighting and a potential power source for items that we take for granted.

Now, it’s one thing that buying this gadget is also resulting in some social good being done elsewhere but if it doesn’t actually work then it is useless to both the domestic consumer and those suffering in other parts of the world. Well, we are quite happy to report that this gadget works exactly as advertised. The solar charger will allow you to keep your gadgets running or store energy for when you might need a recharge (it takes around 8 hours of sunlight to get a full charge in), and could be an invaluable piece of equipment if you are into roughing it this summer. Its clever design will allow you to use the built in lamp from a number of different positions (such as perched atop a water bottle or strung up from a tree or in you tent), and also includes an option to activate an SOS light signal in the event things aren’t going so well for you.

The WakaWaka POWER charger is available for $79.00 from http://waka-waka.com/.

According to a new Pew survey, 77% of teens who use the Internet (so, pretty much every teen) use Facebook. However, teen interest in Facebook has been trending downward, as more and more teens are beginning to dislike the social networking platform. The study suggests that teen usage enthusiasm is waning due to a few qualms they have with Facebook, most notably:

Too many adults on the site

Too much drama on the platform

Too many inane status updates from friends

Well, I hate to break it to you, teens – but you’re all going to become adults one day. Better get used to being around them now. As for your other complaints? I can’t knock you for those, they’re valid.

No one would ever expect the Czech National Symphony Orchestra to whip out their smartphones and tablets to deliver a beautiful rendition of ‘Carmen’. But that’s exactly what they did in this video.

The stunt was a promotional move by a new all-digital European bank, and required 227 separate interfaces, all connected to Wi-Fi, to make it happen.

It’s happened to the best of us – we see a tender moment, a shocking scene, or an unusual sighting unfold in front of our eyes. We immediately reach for our smartphone and begin snapping, only to receive raised eyebrows and perhaps a few verbal smacks when we do so. That’s probably because taking a photo with a smartphone is about as subtle as a flying brick.

Luckily, this new iPhone periscope lens can de-creepify your candid photo taking. It’s easy to use too – just attach the periscope lens to your phone whenever you want to be discreet about your snaps. The lens will stick to your phone with an adhesive ring. Once it’s secure, simply hold your phone as though you’re playing a game or reading an email and voila – you can snap away undetected.

Just make sure your sound is off. That loud shutter noise is a dead giveaway.

The iPhone periscope lens will set you back $22.45.

Nearly eight years ago, in 2005, Microsoft introduced the Xbox 360 to the world. Gamers have purchased more than 70 million units since then, making it one of the top consoles out there. While the company has long stood by the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra – it seems that after nearly a decade of major success, Microsoft is ready to show the world their most-hyped up product since the release of their Kinect technology. Today, Microsoft unveiled their next generation console – the ‘Xbox One’.

One was designed to work as an all-in-one system that will bring together your games, TV, and entertainment under one umbrella. It will support a brand new dashboard that will enable users to multitask while consuming their content (be it games, shows, or movies, or web surfing).

Fans of the Kinect system will be happy to know that it will play a pivotal role in how you use One. From voice-activated on/off and search functionality to gesture-controlled home screen manipulation, you’re going to feel all Minority Report handling the One.

The multitasking options on One are especially exciting. With one simple voice activation, you can switch between TV and a game you’re playing. Or, if you’re watching a movie, it’s no problem to answer a Skype call at the same time.

The hardware looks like this:

Eight-Core CPU

8 gigs of RAM

500 GIG HDD

Blu-Ray Drive

802.11 Wireless with Wi-Fi Direct

HDMI

USB 3.0

What do you think of the Xbox One, are you drooling over it or are you yawning? Let us know in the comments.

(Lots more on the Xbox One here).

It’s always a drag when your clothes get wrinkled, especially when you’re away from home… and you’re wearing said clothes. Luckily, you can now carry a tiny portable iron with you at all times to fix any wrinkles on-the-go.

The ‘Travel Mobile Hot Repressor’ is a small iron that fits in the palm of your hand, and features two internal surfaces that press together to smooth out any wrinkles or wonky lumps and bumps in your clothing – even while you wear it! And you don’t even have to plug it in, either. This portable iron is powered up by a simple USB cord. If you don’t have a USB cord handy, it also takes AA batteries. Pretty convenient!

Would you carry around a portable iron, or will you stick with your at-home appliance?

From alarm clocks that roll away so you have to chase them, to stylish bamboo alarm clock docks for your iPhone – there are virtually hundreds of alarm clock options to get you out of bed every morning. However, I’m fairly certain this is the first time I’ve ever seen an alarm clock that dances and talks to you.

Nuts and Voltz recently created a Kickstarter campaign for their new interactive, customizable robot, named tim-E (pronounced “Timmy”). It’s a bedside buddy that comes alive when you pop in your iPhone or iPod touch.

tim-E can be whoever you want him to be. You can program him to dance to your iTunes music, or pose brain teasers to get your brain working. It all depends on how you want to wake up. tim-E is also great for recording voice reminders, because we all know we great ideas at the most inconvenient times – like 2AM.

Oh, and on a particularly creepy note, you can swap out tim-E’s cute blue face with a photo of your choice (like your child, pet, or your favourite celebrity). That’s pretty weird, but I kind of like it.

For adults, tim-E might be a little much, but for kids he would most likely be a hit. If you’re dying for a little bedside trivia-loving, dancing bot that’ll get you out of bed on time, you can back Nuts and Voltz’s Kickstarter here.

For $21, you’ll get a small sheet of electroluminescent material and a pint-sized power inverter. You’ll need to supply the AAA batteries, sewing needles, and some glue. Together, these bits and pieces will light up your shoes for a good hour before they’ll start to dim.

How cool is this idea? You’d sure garner some attention wearing these bad boys out at night.
