In an event that has sparked a huge cry of unrest from musicians and performers across the world, Pussy Riot have been sentenced to two years in prison for their protest against Vladmir Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church. The three-piece feminist punk band comprised of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alekhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30 were charged for actions that included “committed hooliganism driven by religious hatred.” Protests of support in New York, Russia and Toronto were launched today in solidarity with the band, including this video by Polaris-nominated indie rockers Austra. It has been said that the verdict will be appealed.
