After Paul McCartney fronted a project including the existing members of Nirvana this weekend for the Hurricane Sandy benefit (Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and a member in The Germs’ Pat Smear), buzz has been building about just what this grunge hybrid would sound like. Screaming Trees by way of Wings? Incesticide Helter Skelter? We have the resulting studio version of the band’s track “Cut Me Some Slack” (performed this week live on SNL) and it sounds pretty much exactly what you might expect. With heavily processed guitar reverb, stomping beats by Dave Grohl and of course McCartney’s cavernous Kurt Cobain wail, the Nirvana reunion sounds a little like Audioslave and a lot like crushing grunge nostalgia.
