Odd Future member and hip hop solo artist Frank Ocean made a staggering announcement today on his personal Tumblr when he admitted that his first sexual experience was with a man. “ 4 summers ago, I met somebody,” wrote Ocean. “I was 19. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide… I don’t have any secrets I need to keep anymore. … I feel like a free man.” Frank Ocean’s highly anticipated follow-up Channel Orange will be released July 17th. The musician has collaborated with artists that include Jay-Z and Kanye West and is a rising star in the hip-hop community where homosexuality is highly taboo. However, it seems like the cultural landscape might be changing. Rapper Lil B recently released an album titled I’m Gay while Jay-Z has backed Obama’s support of gay marriage.

Twitter has been an outcry of support today for Ocean. Solange Knowles tweeted, “I salute you, brave soul. Independence Day.” Fans have been surprisingly accepting of Ocean’s statement, as @SkinnyDre wrote, “Frank Ocean is pure greatness. One of the best songwriters we’ll ever get to hear. I highly doubt him coming out will change that.”
