The days of having a friendly, neighbourhood letter carrier could soon be coming to an end.

Because mail volumes have sharply dropped off, Canada Post is looking at changing its mail delivery system. Whereas before letter carriers charmingly tucked letters for their routes into a pouch and walked the neighbourhood, mail delivery workers will now use small vans to complete longer routes.

The carriers will pick up sorted mail and parcels, use the van to perform deliveries, and pick up mail from letterboxes and/or retail outlets on their way back.

The changes have already been implemented over 3,500 routes across Canada.
