A new discount air carrier will hit the Canadian skies as early as July of next year.

Air Canada has announced Rouge, the company’s latest attempt at a discount airline, will launch on July 1, 2013.

Rouge will focus, at least at first, on destinations in Europe and the sunny Caribbean.

While the airline will dedicate four planes borrowed from Air Canada’s primary fleet for the summer, Rouge eventually plans to expand its fleet to 50 of its own planes.

One of the first fares the airline is offering up to eager jet setters looking to save a few bucks is flight from Toronto to Venice, Edinburgh and Athens starting at $949 for roundtrip tickets.
